AIGP
Last reviewed: · By Victor Humenhuk (AIGP certified)
Both routes are legitimate. The IAPP's own certification FAQs state that training is not required in order to sit the exam and that no single paid resource is required to pass it, while recommending at least 30 hours of study per certification. Official IAPP training is the better buy when your employer is paying, when you want an instructor and the official courseware, or when you need CPE credits. Self-study with free structured notes and a practice bank is the better buy when you are funding it yourself, you already work in privacy, legal, risk or product, and you revise well on your own. The exam fee is the same either way: USD 799 for non-members and USD 649 for members, with the IAPP stating that the non-member price includes the first certification maintenance fee. This site is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or connected to the IAPP.

What each route costs end to end
Preparation is only part of the bill. This is what a first AIGP attempt looks like once the exam fee, and membership if you buy it, are added in.
| Route | Preparation | Exam | Membership | Total to first sitting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-study, no membership | $29 question bank, notes free | USD 799 | None | About USD 828 |
| Self-study, with membership | $29 question bank, notes free | USD 649 | USD 295 | About USD 973 |
| Self-paced online IAPP training, no membership | USD 1,195 | USD 799 | None | About USD 1,994 |
| Self-paced online IAPP training, with membership | USD 995 | USD 649 | USD 295 | About USD 1,939 |
| Live online IAPP training, no membership | USD 1,745 | USD 799 | None | About USD 2,544 |
| Live online IAPP training, with membership | USD 1,545 | USD 649 | USD 295 | About USD 2,489 |
Three caveats before you lean on those totals. They are simple arithmetic on prices published on iapp.org at the time of writing, so check iapp.org for current pricing. The certification maintenance fee of USD 250 per two-year certification term falls due at renewal on every route. And the member and non-member columns are not strictly like for like, because the IAPP states that the non-member exam price includes the first maintenance fee and does not describe the member price the same way. Local sales tax, VAT or GST may also be added at checkout.
The point of the table is not that cheaper wins. It is that the gap between routes is preparation, and preparation is the part you can actually choose.
Is IAPP training required in order to sit the AIGP exam?
No. The IAPP's certification FAQs state that training is not required to sit the exam, and that no single paid resource is required to pass it or functions as a catch-all study guide on its own. The stated prerequisite is buying the exam before you can schedule it.
The IAPP's certification process page frames training as a recommendation rather than a requirement. It recommends a minimum of 30 hours of study per certification, and it requires you to purchase an exam, schedule it, and sit it within one year of that purchase.
That leaves you with one honest question to answer about yourself: will you actually put in those 30 hours without a paid course and a fixed date making you? Plenty of people will. Plenty of people know full well they will not, and for them the course fee buys accountability as much as content.
When official IAPP training is the better choice
There are several situations where paying for the official course is straightforwardly the right call, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise on a page like this.
- Your employer is paying. If the training budget exists, use it. Spending someone else's USD 1,195 to save your own weekends is a good trade, and the free notes here still cost you nothing on top.
- You want instructor access. The live online and in-person formats give you a person to put a question to in real time. No amount of written material replaces being able to ask why an answer is wrong and get a considered reply on the spot.
- You want the official courseware. The IAPP publishes the AIGP body of knowledge and writes its own materials against it. If you would rather study from the source, buy from the source.
- You need CPE credits. If you already hold a certification and need credits towards maintaining it, official training is the route designed for that. Nothing here earns credits.
- You are new to the field. If AI governance, privacy law and risk management are all unfamiliar at once, structured teaching with a curriculum and a schedule is worth paying for.
- Deadlines work on you and good intentions do not. A cohort with fixed session dates beats a browser tab you keep meaning to open.
- You want everything in one place from one supplier. Buying the course and the exam from the same organisation is simply less to manage, and some employers will only reimburse an official invoice.
What this site does not give you
Read this before you decide that free is enough.
- No official materials. Nothing here is a copy of, extract from, or replacement for the IAPP's textbook, courseware or published body of knowledge. These are independent notes, and you should verify any point against the current official sources.
- No CPE credits. Reading and drilling here counts towards your understanding and nothing else.
- No instructor. There is no live teaching, no cohort and no hand to raise. Email reaches one person, not a training team.
- No real exam questions. Every question, in both the free set and the paid bank, is original and written from the published body of knowledge. Nobody legitimate sells actual exam items.
- No accreditation or affiliation. This is a self-published study aid from THESMIOS LTD, registered in England and Wales, company number 17150638. It is not an approved or authorised training partner, and AIGP, CIPP/E, CIPP/US and IAPP marks are used descriptively only.
- No guaranteed outcome. The IAPP sets, administers and marks the AIGP. This site has no access to or influence over the exam, and no study aid can promise you a pass.
How to combine both without wasting money
Plenty of people do both, and the free material still earns its place when the course is funded. A sensible order looks like this.
- Take the readiness check first, before you spend anything. It scores you per body-of-knowledge domain, so you find out where you are actually weak rather than where you assume you are.
- Read the free notes to build the map. If a course follows later, you arrive already fluent in the vocabulary, which is exactly when instructor time is worth the most money.
- Spend the paid training on what you cannot self-teach: your worst-scoring domains, and anything where you want to argue a point with a human being.
- Drill questions in the final stretch. Start with the 28 free questions, and add the 229-question bank if you want more volume and per-domain scoring. Retrieval practice close to the exam is what moves scores, whichever route taught you the material.
- Keep the notes open for the week before the exam. They were written as a revision layer, not a first read. The how to pass guide sets out the final fortnight in more detail.
Costs for both routes are set out on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Is this site affiliated with or endorsed by the IAPP?
No. These are independent study materials published by THESMIOS LTD. They are not affiliated with, authorised by, endorsed by, sponsored by or connected to the IAPP. AIGP, CIPP and related marks are trademarks of the IAPP and are used here for identification and description only.
Do I have to take IAPP training before I can sit the AIGP exam?
No. The IAPP's certification FAQs state that training is not required in order to sit the exam. The requirement is to purchase the exam and then schedule it, and the certification process page says the exam must be sat within one year of purchase. The IAPP recommends at least 30 hours of study per certification, but leaves it to you how you do them.
Do these notes replace the official IAPP courseware?
No, and they are not designed to. They are independent notes structured around the published AIGP body of knowledge, written to support active recall. Laws and syllabi change, so verify anything that matters against the current official sources and the IAPP's own up-to-date body of knowledge.
Is IAPP membership worth paying for?
Membership is listed at USD 295 a year. It brings the AIGP exam down from USD 799 to USD 649 and self-paced online AIGP training from USD 1,195 to USD 995. One caveat matters before you do that arithmetic: the IAPP states that the non-member exam price includes the first certification maintenance fee, so the two exam prices are not a like-for-like comparison. Check iapp.org for current pricing and terms before deciding.
Is there a bundle covering both the exam and the training?
The IAPP store lists exams and training courses as separate products. Check iapp.org for current pricing and for any packages it may offer.
